The new Civic Spirit – Brazilian Society as model?

What do the protests of 2013, families on bicycles in the centre of São Paulo, Indigenous people in the Brazilian Parliament, the São Paulo Architecture Biennale’s motto “City – How to make, how to use“, the billionaire Philip Yang and a new museum in Vitória have in common? What do we know about Brazil – the rising country on the search for identity? How did the positive economic growth in the past years impact Brazil’s society and the global perception of Brazil? The theory of a new public spirit and Brazil’s society as model for other societies strike me as interesting concepts which I will explore.

The Avenida Paulista As A Place For Culture In The 21st Century

This article is about the history of Avenida Paulista, a Brazilian myth, the economic center of South America and a reflection of the complex urbanity of São Paulo. Fifty years after the construction of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), the new building of the Instituto Moreira Salles/SP represents ,in a special way, the transition between public and architectural space. It proves that cultural institutions can initiate processes as a catalyst for social developments that have far-reaching urban and social effects.

From Arved Jürgensohn to the summerhouse Eckart Muthesius: Seasonal Living. Hiddensee

The history of the property at number 3 Kirchweg, Kloster on the island of Hiddensee, is also the story of two personalities, whose life and work is especially connected with the island. In a fascinating manner, the story is a reflection of German history in the twentieth century, from the Weimar Republic to the reunification of a divided Germany. Arved Jürgensohn (1862-1927) and Eckart Muthesius (1904-1989) belonged to the German avantgarde artists, writers, architects and intellectuals, who at the beginning of the twentieth century found naturality, leisure and spiritual inspiration in the unique local landscape.

Urban scales – Architecture as symbiosis of landscape and cityscape

This article is a study on São Paulo, a city that is still in the process of emancipation in terms of its architectural output and cultural self-confidence. São Paulo‘s cityscape represents a unique symbiosis of original geography and urbanized area. The natural topography had and still has an enormous impact on the urban fingerprint and the architecture particular to this new landscape. The objective is to examine this process of successive urban overlays and a series of carefully calibrated architectures it has created.

The close-by and the elsewhere: Seasonal Living

Seasonal living is an urban phenomenon in the countryside. The city dweller wants to leave the overregulated civilisation from time to time. A yearning for the primal, the simple, lures him into nature. With the periodical adjustment of the centre of life, a form of living has developed here that should be called >seasonal<. Seasonal living puts the period of utilisation and its influence on architecture in the centre of consideration. Dualism, connection to nature, flexibility and reduction are major features of seasonal architecture.
